Community service has a positive effect

The Glenholme Community Service Program continues to have a positive effect on the quality of life for area residents, the environment, and the campus community. Unlike other schools, Glenholme’s program is operated on a volunteer basis and historically has enjoyed 100% participation from the student population in community service endeavors. From campus fundraisers and clean-ups to nursing home visits and environmental efforts, students are empowered by their volunteer experiences in the school’s community service program and it shows.

Many students of Nursing Home become surrogate grandchildren for the residents of the Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation (CVHR) in New Milford. Playing bingo, sharing stories and simply enjoying the refreshing company of young people brightens the day for these individuals. Each year, CVHR rewards the dedication of the students with a festive night full of fantastic food, merry music and delightful dancing! It’s truly a unique experience that only volunteering can provide.

Environmental efforts also provide great rewards. Many industrious Glenholme students regularly volunteer their time and energy to maintaining and preserving the trails of local nature preserves for future generations. Recently, Community Service began the 2010 program at Flanders Flanders Nature Center & Land Trust, which encompasses more than 40 open areas and over 2,000 acres in Woodbury, Bethlehem, Middlebury, and Southbury. Pride, self-appreciation and the enjoyment of nature are just a few empowering experiences for these volunteers.

By giving to the community, students give to themselves. Personal achievement, overcoming obstacles, meeting new people, gaining new perspectives are just a few outcomes that have a positive effect on the quality of life of the community and those who dedicate their time to volunteering. Glenholme encourages community service and the students are empowered by their efforts.
