Open Mic celebrates Black History Month
Open Mic dedicated the last week of February to Black History Month, with the daily lunchtime performances incorporating individual readings to musical ensembles with emphases that spanned the globe.
Matt B and Chris S effectively worked the microphone together for a reading of a William Ernst Henly Poem on Monday, February 22. On Tuesday, February 23, Ashlyn H eloquently read an original piece about Dr. Vivien Theodore Thomas written by fellow student, Spencer S. The mid-week performance was provided by the students of Ms. O’Toole’s class, who delivered a two part hymn, "When the Saints Go Marching In." On Thursday, February 25, the students of Ms. Kimberly’s class became an exception musical ensemble as they harmonized a traditional West African folk song under the direction of Mr. Toy. The final performance of Open Mic’s Black History Month celebration on Friday, February 26 was provided by Harrison T, along with Will S and PJ V; together they delivered an "I Have a Dream" presentation inspired by the 1963 speech of the same name by Martin Luther King, Jr.
All the Open Mic participants did spectacular job presenting and performing with the lunchtime audiences were polite and respectful. Congratulations to all on a job well done!
