Glenholme joins the Judea Community Garden

During the months of July, August, and September six Glenholme students with varying gardening experience spent several evenings a week working in the Judea Community Garden in Washington, CT. In this inaugural year of the Judea Community Garden, Glenholme students enjoyed the opportunity to grow a crop for the garden. Jessica D, Sarah P, Max C, Andrew Pi, Luke R, and Richard S demonstrated their talent, excitement and dedication towards this community service project throughout the entire growing season.

Their crop was, in turn, donated to various groups of people within the community and neighboring towns. Green beans were chosen because they a reliable plant which grows relatively quick. Glenholme’s Green Bean Project began in the greenhouse where the students planted seeds in trays and in just a few weeks the seedlings were transplanted to the grounds of the garden. Glenholme’s students maintained and picked over 100 feet of these quick producing green bean plants. Each week they competed to find the biggest beans and take in the largest bag of beans. It took on an Olympian effort.

The Glenholme green beans were quite productive weighing in at over 135lbs. Green beans were only a portion of the overall garden production; the various crops included tomatoes, peppers, summer squash, winter squash, eggplant, and others. In the town of Washington, the produce was distributed to families in need and distributed through the town's senior center programs and in New Milford via the Social Services Food Bank.

Those involved with the Judea Community Garden and Glenholme’s Green Been Project found great pleasure in working with these enthusiastic students as they improved their gardening skills and made a positive impact on their region through participation in this successful community service project.
