Parent Seminar Modules Posted
Devereux Glenholme continues to offer regular Parent Workshops with new topics on parenting in which parents of Glenholme students gather and learn how the staff and faculty create an environment that allows each child to achieve his or her full potential. In addition, the Parent Seminar modules will now be posted to the parent website, a special website for parents of Glenholme students. Topics of the Parent Seminars include: Praising Effectively, Understanding Reinforcement, Dealing with Coercion/Verbal Warnings, Using Timeout, Making Requests that Work, Building Relationships, and Structuring Time at Home. Each topic will be posted for approximately one month after it is presented.
Bringing families together to participate actively in the treatment process is one of the best tools for helping a child make progress here. Parents attend "New Directions" workshops and receive a certificate of completion. They also have a chance to get to know other families and become comfortable in the Glenholme environment. Parents attend the workshops to:
- Learn more ways to help their child
- Learn new skills in dealing with difficult situations
- Talk with other parents
- Participate in role playing and discussions
- Become a better parent
- Show their child they care
Glenholme has recently conducted studies that demonstrated that parental participation in learning opportunities, such as Glenholme’s Friday Seminar Series and Parent Day events, has led to parents being more likely to apply the techniques that are trained. More importantly, a follow-up study demonstrated that children of parents who attend the seminars and apply the behavioral techniques are more likely to have higher rates of improvement on their referral behaviors when compared to children whose parents have not been involved in the educational offerings. |
