The
Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe
Early this year, Section 2 began to read a new book, one
that greatly impressed them with its adventure. Their teacher,
Ms. Lunan encouraged their level of involvement with the
story utilizing Glenholme's Arts Integration when they decided
to make a play out of the book. Thus, a small group of students
put on a show of C. S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch, and the
Wardrobe.
The audience scrambled for seats in the fundamental Black
Box Theater of the Arts Center. Ms. Lunan explained to the
younger students that Section 2 worked for two months to
show them the story that they made. Writing the script themselves
from important ideas in the book, the play offered a sample
of the story in hopes that other students would wonder what
happened to the children in Lewis' story and read the book
themselves. Ms. Lunan told the audience, "The words
they say will tell you the story." And then the play
began.

With a set depicting a bare-branched wintry tree, a light
post and, yes, a wardrobe, Lucy enters. Seeing a spare room
with a crowded wardrobe ("some fur, some not"),
she begins her adventure wondering if perhaps it were all
a dream. "All sorts of things happened to me," she
says as the play ended - in suspense, of course.
Each student memorized their lines and wore fun costumes
to bring the story to life. They, along with Ms. Lunan,
and Arts Coordinator Ms. Ruhf offered an intriguing glimpse
of a great story through this captivating play, and a further
understanding of the cooperation, responsibility and respect
that arts integration can present to students as they enjoy
and learn.
Cast and audience members were treated to a piece of Turkish
Delight, a sweet delicious candy also connected to the story.
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is worth the trip
to the bookstore or library.
