As Devereux Glenholme celebrates its 35th anniversary in Washington, the school is greatly strengthened by its community service participation. Devereux Glenholme School's Community Service program first began in response to the national America's Promise effort. By making this commitment to become a Community of Promise, the school strives to improve the lives of the nation's at-risk youth by providing them with fundamental resources to build and strengthen the character and competence of our youth. Throughout the state of Connecticut, communities have come together to support this effort and successfully generate more resources for young people today. Our Student Volunteers Over the years, the students have planned and participated in thousands of service activities; for instance, weekly visits to Candlewood Valley nursing home, holiday collections and donations, and our annual Easter Egg Hunt. The most memorable social event of the past year was the Senior Prom. Voices crooned to songs of the forties, fifties and the nineties. From break dancing to the jitterbug, the students and seniors shared their favorite dance moves. The afternoon was captured as the senior citizens watched with tears of joy, the newly crowned prom king and queen dancing in the circle to "Moonlight Serenade." These smiles displayed by the senior citizens are enough to leave a lasting impression as to the effect volunteers can have.
