Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center in New Milford hosted a reception for all their active volunteers on April 28. Carolynn DeRocco and support staff provided twelve Glenholme students with a delicious dinner and recognition for their volunteer work. Renowned entertainer, Tom Callinan filled the room with music and laughter as volunteers joined in sing-a-longs and danced to the Hokie Pokie at the end of the evening. DeRocco and two Candlewood residents acknowledged each volunteer and presented them with "Volunteer Survival Kits." As Alex's name was announced, he rose from his seat with a smile, looking down with a touch of embarrassment and accomplishment. When he reached the front of the room, he extended his hand to accept a firm handshake. Instead of a handshake, Alex was approached with a heartfelt hug from resident, Laurie Dann. This emotional moment was earned through weekly visits with Laurie on Wednesday Bingo night. Moments like this, is what makes National Volunteer Week so successful. "These children are the most polite, compassionate, young adults I have ever met. It amazes me how they help residents get paid emotionally and therapeutically", Dann remarked. Two of the Glenholme students, Elena S. and Lauren B., were presenters in Connecticut's Fifth Assets-Based Character Education Conference held May 1 at Central Connecticut State University Center in New Britain. The conference was sponsored by The School for Ethical Education of Bridgeport and incorporated workshops given by educators and students from across the state. "This conference is designed to encourage the collaboration between students and adults to promote character, healthy youth lifestyles, and caring communities", stated the Conference Coordinator, David Wangaard. The two students accompanied by Mary Guilfoile, Director of Training and Nicole Groody, Public Relations Director, who oversees the Community Service Program, described how cross-generational programs establish a strong sense of community and create an appreciation for the contributions of both youth and seniors. The presentation explained how programs such as the "Senior Prom" and weekly visits to seniors make a positive difference. The girls displayed a sense of pride and accomplishment as they provided useful information to the community, receiving compliments and recognition for all of their hard work and contribution to others. One of the nation's most valuable resources is a volunteer. National Volunteer Week is a celebration of volunteer community service and a time to recognize the dedicated volunteers at the Glenholme School and across the country. |
