Glenholme School Observes "Day of Caring" with Flag Ceremony

Washington,CT ... The Glenholme School's students, faculty and staff gathered this windy Wednesday morning to commemorate September 11, the anniversary of our nation's darkest day. As a demonstration of patriotism, Devereux Glenholme School declared September 11 as a "Day of Caring." The younger children made flags and the older students created a caring chain of red, white and blue construction paper covered with words and thoughts of hope and compassion. A bulletin board on display in the schoolhouse features random acts of caring that students have and plan to participate in for the rest of the school year.

Mr. Craig, the school's history and social studies teacher, assisted by students Elena S. and Lauren B., raised a new American flag. A moment of silence was held for everyone to stop and think about what happened on September 11, 2001, and to reflect on all those who lost their lives.
Dan B, a student in Mr. Craig's class read, "9-11 Memorial Prayer," a poem he wrote to express his feelings of last year's tragedy ending with: "We will never fully heal, only learn a lesson about the value of life."

Ms. Volpe, the Devereux Glenholme music teacher followed by leading everyone in singing "God Bless America." Glenholme's Executive Administrator Maryann Campbell concluded the morning's special event by instructing everyone to cover their heart with their hand and recite the "Pledge of Allegiance." Mr. Craig lowered the flag to half-mast in respect of all of the Americans who died as a result of the terrorist attacks.
Following the flag memorial, an All-American cookout of hamburger and hotdogs was held on the campus lawn. All of the proceeds from the cookout were donated to a local charity.
