IMMEDIATE RELEASE January, 2002 Washington,CT ... Devereux Glenholme hosted a Red Cross Blood Drive on its campus recently as part of its continuing commitment to Community Service. Although it is a project of the students Community Service program, blood donors came primarily from the staff and faculty of the school. Of all the possible appointments available, 83% were filled, half of them by Devereux Glenholme staff and faculty. Thirty-eight pints of blood were collected for the Red Cross. Students helped with greeting and registering donors, made goodies for the canteen and then served donors after they gave blood. The outstanding commitment from the faculty and staff echoes the efforts of the students. After September 11, Devereux Glenholme became an emergency relief drop-off site for Northwestern Connecticut and collected great quantities of goods for rescue workers. Although students received donations, sorted and organized and prepared for shipment, the adults around them were responsible for many of the donations. The students also help the United Way with back-to-school outfits, made Thanksgiving baskets for the community, and collected mittens, gloves and presents for the less fortunate at Christmas. In all these efforts, they are supported by the teachers and staff of the school. The schools Community Service Program has totaled over 10,000 hours of service in the past five years, showing a big commitment to the Communities of Character program for which the school is known. The additional cooperation of staff and faculty gives the students in the program invaluable role models for the future. Devereux Glenholme is part of The Devereux Foundation, a national organization. The Washington, CT campus is home to nearly 100 children with emotional, learning or behavioral difficulties.
