IMMEDIATE RELEASE February, 2001 Washington,CT ... Students at The Glenholme School in Washington, CT initiated a project to display kindness and justice in memory of Martin Luther King, Jr. Their project was part of a national program to focus on these character traits during January. The children at the school were given nomination forms to recognize staff members who are role models for these two traits. They also created bulletin boards to illustrate these values. The program ended with a formal recognition ceremony and the presentation of gifts and awards to those who were nominated. As part of the Kindness and Justice Challenge, several students submitted written work about community service at the school. Sean T. wrote, “There are several things people can do for Community Service. I enjoy going to the Candlewood Valley Care Nursing Home. It gives me a great f4eeling of joy to help those who need help the most. I like the fact that they are so happy when youth held them out, especially when our generation has been portrayed as being so bad. It gives us a chance to change the way they think. We are there to make their remaining time here the best it can be. I think it is great because we both get equal enjoyment out of being together and playing games. I do this because I want to, not because I have to.” Devereux Glenholme is part of the Devereux Foundation, a national foundation with centers in 12 states and the District of Columbia. The Washington, CT campus provides a residential academic program for children, ages 5 to 16, with emotional and learning difficulties. |
