IMMEDIATE RELEASE February, 2001 Washington,CT ... Teens Who Care, a philanthropic foundation formed by students at The Glenholme School, has recently awarded two grants, both to help aid survivors of natural disasters, hurricane and earthquake, in Central America. The Teens Who Care met with members of St. John's Youth Group from Washington. Devereux student, Penn S., is also a member of this church group. The six youth group members, with two chaperones, will be traveling to Honduras the third week of June to help build houses in a community near San Pedro Sula. The youth group has worked for almost two years to raise the necessary funds, and Teens Who care awarded a $500 grant to help them meet their goal. Teens Who Care also voted to award $300 to purchase medical supplies for survivors of the El Salvadorian earthquake. Through a local connection the group was able to contact a family in El Salvador who could receive the supplies and distribute them throughout their community. The students purchased blankets and clothing, plus a quantity of medical supplies. Glenholme teacher, Lourdes Crespan, helped to translate all the instructions on first aid supplies and everything was shipped by mid-February. Teens Who Care are a select group of Glenholme students who have been involved in Community Service. They meet on a weekly basis to review requests from other student groups and grant funds for their projects. Student groups in Litchfield County are eligible to apply for funds.
