IMMEDIATE RELEASE October, 2000 Washington,CT ... Representatives of Devereux Glenholme were recently selected as presenters at the Twenty-sixth Governor's Youth Action Conference in Hartford. The school's Community Service Coordinators Bonnie Goulet and Lisa Williams were selected for the efforts in establishing a student philanthropic organization. They guided the students at Devereux as they developed the Student Leadership Foundation. This student-run organization reviews proposals from other student groups and gives grants to worthy causes. It was an outgrowth of the Community Service Program, which was, established about five years ago and which has resulted in 7,000 years of service. This model program gave the impetus to students to move to the next level, the Student Leadership Foundation, which allowed them to understand how a foundation works, review and evaluate applicants, and manage funds. Workshops and swap shops at the Youth Action Conference provided participants with the opportunity to learn and share information about citizenship, student volunteerism, leadership skills and volunteer programs that can be implemented in any community. Williams and Goulet's workshop, "Youth Philanthropy: Foundations Can Be Fun," was offered to middle and high school students, teachers and youth workers. The two coordinators explained how to teach youth leadership skills, how to provide students with opportunities to identify how they feel about social issues while they learn to respect other's opinions. The presenters and their Community Service Program have received awards from America's Promise as a Teaching Example, from Governor John G. Rowland's Challenge to Educational Citizenship Award, and a Promising Practices Citation from the Character Education Partnership. Devereux Glenholme is part of The Devereux Foundation, a national organization with centers in 12 states and the District of Columbia.
