| The benefits of Glenholme’s student leadership programs are tremendous: through meaningful participation both in and beyond the classroom, students demonstrate their talents and interests, develop confidence in their abilities, and improve their advocacy, public speaking, teamwork, and decision making skills. This level of active involvement, rarely afforded to Glenholme students in their previous school placements, creates a greater sense of ownership and investment in the Glenholme program. |

| One such leadership program, the Glenholme Student Council, allows students to share their ideas, interests, and concerns with the school’s administration, faculty, and parents. Through a variety of school-wide activities, the group also raises funds for campus projects and scholarships. Their recent contributions have had a positive impact across campus: in 2008, the Student Council gifted a bench to put outside the schoolhouse’s Science Wing, and in 2009, they donated the Glenholme Grizzly mascot costume that regularly inspires school spirit at sporting venues and campus events. Last year, the Student Council held a contest to create a Glenholme flag and, this year, they plan to raise funds for a flag pole, so that this new source of school pride can be prominently displayed on campus. |

The Student Council officer positions are vital to the success of the organization, and competition among this year’s candidates was keen. Thirteen upperclassmen entered the race for six coveted positions including President, Vice President, Treasurer, Executive at Large, Secretary and Public Relations. The three weeks of campaigning concluded on Friday, October 21, when the student body watched the candidate speeches during the Friday morning Glenholme News report, cast their ballots for their favorite candidates, and waited for the tally to be announced. In their speeches, two candidates expressed their position well and ultimately prevailed in the race: A candidate for Student Council Secretary said, “I will not make any promises that I cannot keep, but I will keep an open mind for endless possibilities.” A Vice Presidential candidate noted, “I’m doing this to take reasonable ideas that bring positive change to our school, and put them into action.” |
