| Every fall, as the air gets crisper and the leaves turn to orange, the excitement of Halloween begins to build. On this popular holiday, students throughout the country take a break from the day-to-day routine to decorate, dress up, eat candy, and have some spooky, silly fun. |

| However, when October 31 arrived, Glenholme was still enduring the effects of the nor’easter that rolled through the state on Saturday, October 29. When over a foot of heavy, wet snow met an abundance of fall foliage, the result was nothing shy of a disaster that destroyed utility lines and caused a record number of outages across Connecticut. On Monday, the Glenholme community was among the weary who still did not have power. While the generators hummed and the utility crews worked tirelessly to restore power – the supernatural ghosts, goblins, and heroes awaited the Halloween that almost wasn’t. |

| But no amount of snow, darkness, or gloom could keep this beloved holiday from the Glenholme campus. On the unusually warm autumn day of November 7, Halloween arrived. The students ofPuebloand Birchwood traded their snow boots and coats for costumes and candy bags, and trick-or-treated across campus to the enjoyment of all. Afterwards, the younger students attended the annual Monster Mash in The Commons. Organized and hosted by the male students of GlenRidge, this fun-filled event included games such as Spooky Limbo, Hidden Spider, Mummy Wrap, and a Costume Contest. Later in the evening, two student DJs entertained the older students at the Halloween Social with a high-energy medley of dance, pop, rock, and classic Halloween tunes. |

| Halloween festivities and other community building activities are essential to the social and emotional learning of students with special needs. By participating in traditions – such as planning social events, putting together costumes, and attending school dances - students are given the opportunity to develop teamwork skills, initiate and maintain conversations, interpret body language, and strengthen friendships. These social events, which occur throughout the year, foster a positive, supportive environment and create a sense of school spirit and community. |
