| Almost everyone’s life has been touched by breast cancer in some way – whether a loved one has just been diagnosed or a friend has survived – and the Glenholme community is no exception. This October, in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the girls of Glenholme joined together to support their beloved teacher, Sue Clarke, who is currently battling the disease.
On Monday, October 24, 2011, the female students of Glenholme hosted their first ever philanthropy event in the gym. Clad in shades of pink, the girls collected donations at the door, sold baked goods, homemade bracelets, and bookmarks, and led the students and staff in limbo and other group games. During a break in the student DJed music, three of the girls gave heartfelt speeches in which they thanked everyone for their support, explained the history of the Susan G. Komen foundation, and honored Ms. Clarke, who will be sent a video of the event to watch. |

The first of many fund-raising activities the girls are planning, this fun, high energy, and inspirational event allowed the Glenholme community to come together to raise money and awareness for a truly worthwhile cause. With nearly $700 raised, the girls will go to a salon to get feathers or pink extensions woven into their hair. The salon will then donate all of the funds to the Susan G. Komen foundation, which aims to find a cure for breast cancer. From campus fundraisers and clean-ups to nursing home visits and environmental efforts, Glenholme’s philanthropic and community service efforts have a positive effect on the community and on those who dedicate their time to volunteering. By giving to others, students also give to themselves: they develop a sense of personal achievement, overcome obstacles, gain new perspectives, and learn and practice positive values that promote good decision making. With their efforts to fight for a cure, these female students exemplify the Glenholme character values of kindness and community service. The entire Glenholme community applauds them for their thoughtfulness, compassion, and hard work. During this special week, faculty enjoyed a campus filled with displays of recognition, refreshments, thoughtful gifts, special staff acknowledgements and student appreciation. The Glenholme School is a therapeutic boarding school for young people who are diagnosed with Asperger’s, ADHD, OCD, PDD, Tourette’s, depression, anxiety, and various learning differences. The program provides a treatment milieu designed to build competence socially and academically. Our learning environment supports and enhances the success of special needs students. |
