Equestrian Program

Glenholme's equestrian program offers students therapeutic, educational, and recreational opportunities in equitation, horsemanship, stable management, vocational education, and community service.

The program is committed to safety and horsemanship and incorporates the school's core values specific to Respect, Responsibility, Honesty, Community Service, Kindness and Fairness linked to the Glenholme Motivational Management Approach and value-based education. It provides an optimal learning environment that emphasizes the development of a strong, positive character and moral responsibility.

The riding program provides instruction for all students' ages and ability levels. All children participating in any aspect of the equestrian program receive standardized instruction in the natural psychology and behavior of the horse, equine safety practices and general horse care.

Standard accepted curricula are used for teaching and incorporate high standards that are based on practices from the American Association for Horsemanship Safety (AAHS), North American Riding for the Handicapped Association (NARHA), Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) and United States Pony Club (USPC).

The equestrian program also offers opportunities for students to experience community service. Community service hours are earned for time spent caring for the horses exclusive of the riding program. This includes feeding, stall care, and other horse care activities. Glenholme students also earn community service hours for time spent volunteering at local horse shows.

Children involved with the equestrian program are able to achieve a level of insight to their personal strengths and abilities. Often a positive emotional relationship with animals is fostered and enjoyed. Opportunities of equestrian involvement provide the practical experience where skills are learned and mastered having a positive effect on the child's overall behavior.
