At Devereux Glenholme arts and culture are key elements in each
student's education and residential life. The Arts allow for
the use of diverse and creative means to motivate children and
engage children positively. The professionals at Glenholme utilize
an arts integration approach based on the H.O.T. (Higher Order
Thinking) School model to infuse drama, art and music to extend
learning and thinking skills. This integration creates links
for a greater understanding in areas of social, emotional, academic,
and behavioral areas. Additionally, the arts stimulate positive
social interaction and build each child's confidence in a more
traditional learning environment.
The
Arts are a vehicle to assist
teaching and is paired with
the Glenholme Motivational
Management Approach to instruct,
reinforce, and positively
shape behavior. Children
involved with the Arts are
impacted in a multitude
of positive ways. Student
participation in instructional
classes in drama, music
and art is based on the
child's interest. The children
learn positive ways to express
themselves. The pairing
of self-esteem activities
through Arts with character
education allows children
to realize the full benefits
of both.
Through
the Arts program, children
learn different forms of
artistic expression, and
begin to integrate the positive
feedback and influence they
receive in class to their
external environments. They
learn dramatic style and
expression such as mime,
comedy, and improvisational
techniques. They learn to
use a variety of artistic
mediums such as drawing,
painting, building and sculpting.
The children spend time
working on social skill
domain areas such as cooperation,
assertion, responsibility,
empathy, and self-control.
Through this learning process,
they practice these skills
to help foster effective
communication strategies,
which benefits each child's
overall learning and growth.
Devereux
Glenholme offers experiences
in drama, music and art.
During the school day students
receive academic credit
for music and art classes.
Drama is taught after school.
However, all three are linked
to academic themes to enhance
and expand on the learning
opportunity.
After
school groups in drama,
music and art meet every
day of the week. Drama,
choral and arts groups perform
shows and concerts throughout
the year.
